Building the Record for Repair: How Harm Reports Move Reparations Forward

Join the NYCLU and others for a virtual webinar discussion, Building the Record for Repair: How Harm Reports Move Reparations Forward, on Sep 23, 2026 at 1pm. This Reparations Information Thought Series examines three harm reports from New York, New Jersey, and Lakeland, Maryland, and explores how documenting historical wrongs, tracing their continuing impacts, and identifying those responsible can help move communities from truth-telling to concrete reparative remedies. State and city government-commissioned reports as well as civil society organizations, can all undertake the essential work of building the factual record upon which reparative demands and remedies can rest.

Reports and speakers include:

  • “The Other New York: the Legacy of Slavery and Case for Reparations,” with Lanessa Owens-Chaplin (NYCLU) and David Wheaton (NAACP-LDF)
  • “For Such a Time as This: The Nowness of Reparations for Black People in New Jersey,” with Jean-Pierre Brutus (NJ Institute for Social Justice)
  • “Restorative Justice for Lakeland: A Report of Historical Harms Contemporary Impacts and Policies for Redress” with Rev. Dr. JoAnne Braxton (Braxton Institute) and Maxine Gross (Lakeland Community Heritage Project)
