March 21, 2010 — About 100 NYCLU supporters from across the state joined the estimated 200,000 on the National Mall for the March for America, a rally calling for the urgent passage of comprehensive immigration reform. Here on Long Island, a handful of Nassau and Suffolk Chapter members joined the NYCLU contingent by hopping on Hampton Jitney buses that were chartered by the Long Island Immigrant Alliance for the trek down to Washington, D.C. Our Long Island members, as well as the rest of the NYCLU contingent, carried signs reading “Rights For All” and “Derechos Para Todos” and joined the chants of “Si se Puede!” and “Yes we can!” The rally, organized by Reform Immigration FOR America, drew people from across the nation, all joining together with one voice to urge the administration to pass comprehensive immigration reform now. Here at NYCLU, we demand an immigration reform bill that would provide a path to citizenship, ensure due process protections, end local enforcement of immigration laws, provide standards for better treatment in immigration detention centers and prohibit any biometric national ID cards. Stay tuned for more local Long Island rallies in the coming month. NYCLU will continue to fight with our allies for immediate reform!
