Civil Liberties Union
September 23, 2005 New York: The New York Civil Liberties Union is pleased to announce that Christopher Campbell has been appointed Acting Director of its Suffolk County Chapter. Suffolk Chapter President Stan Gewanter welcomed Campbell saying, “The addition of Chris to our staff is in keeping with our commitment to defending the rights and freedoms of all New Yorkers. Chris has the enthusiasm, experience, and skills to build an even stronger presence for the NYCLU in Suffolk County.” Gewanter added, “Mr. Campbell has been working with this chapter for years, and now he has the opportunity to take his experience and use it to further protect the constitutional rights of the people of Suffolk County.” The Suffolk chapter is one of seven chapters that the NYCLU maintains in New York State. These chapters enable the NYCLU and ACLU to work on a local level, advocating for individual rights and educating the public about the importance of such fundamental freedoms as privacy, reproductive rights and racial equality. On a national level, the ACLU remains the leading organization devoted to supporting the Constitution of the United States. Campbell brings the legal background necessary to understanding the intricacies of the Constitution and its relevance to Suffolk County. A graduate of Rutgers University, Campbell earned his J.D. from Touro Law School and has served as a legal fellow in the Suffolk Chapter Office, where he aided in creating the legal department, as has worked with community lobbying organizations such as the Bill of Rights Defense Campaign. “This is a crucial moment in our country’s history, as we try to find ways to ensure our freedom and our security,” said Campbell. “I look forward to serving as an active spokesperson for civil liberties, and to working with residents of Suffolk in defending these rights within our community, our state, and our nation.”
