New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly took his shoes off at an Astoria mosque's doorway and padded across the meeting-room floor with a message…"Racial profiling is prohibited by the police department," Mr. Kelly said. This week, the New York Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit seeking class-action status regarding a database maintained by the NYPD containing information obtained during "stop and frisk" checks. The lawsuit alleged that a disproportionate number of minorities are stopped. Mr. Kelly defended the practice of random checks of people "who fit a description," but added, "We ask for your forbearance if it happens."
