ACLU of NY Responds to Trump Indictment

NEW YORK – Today a grand jury in Manhattan indicted Former President Donald Trump. The following statement is attributable to New York Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Donna Lieberman:

“No one is above the law. Former President Trump’s indictment by a grand jury in Manhattan sends a powerful message that justice will not be subverted by intimidation or political power. As this process unfolds, the former president is entitled to the presumption of innocence and his supporters have the right to speak out through protest. They do not, however, have the right to threaten public officials or anyone else with violence, as they did on January 6, 2021. City officials and the NYPD have the responsibility to manage any protest or counter-protest without favor, and in ways that both protect rights and deescalate tensions.”
