Gov. Hochul Doubles Down on National Guard in NYC Subways

NEW YORK CITY – Yesterday, Governor Hochul announced that the state will add 250 members of the National Guard to the city’s subway system. In response, New York Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Donna Lieberman issued the following statement:

“Sending more National Guard troops to monitor our already heavily-policed subways is little more than public security theater.

“Subway crime was trending down significantly before the Governor’s National Guard deployment last spring, and there is little to suggest it’s made much difference. The millions the state will spend on this additional deployment are millions that won’t go to supportive housing, health care, and other investments in meaningful solutions that keep our communities safe.”
