Gov. Hochul Vetoes Hospital Transparency Act
ALBANY – Yesterday, Governor Hochul vetoed the Hospital Transparency Act (S.1003A-Hinchey / A.733A-Rozic). The bill would have given patients the ability to find out whether the hospital in their area provides the care they need and helped identify care deserts. In response, the New York Civil Liberties Union issued the following statement from Executive Director Donna Lieberman:
“At a time when abortion is under attack, Governor Hochul has vetoed critical legislation that would have advanced transparency about what care New York hospitals provide, including abortion, and laid the ground to address health care deserts.
“The Governor rationalized her decision with dubious claims of cost-savings. In reality, Governor Hochul has cast her vote to maintain the status quo of our broken health care system—at the expense of New Yorkers who need health care that is under attack.
“As Trump and his allies look to ban abortion nationwide, the Governor has broken her pledge that New York is doing everything possible to be an abortion access state. It is deeply disappointing that, for the second time in two days, the Governor has chosen to veto common sense legislation that would have fortified civil rights and liberties protections for New Yorkers. This ill-advised veto comes on the heels of her veto of the Jury of Our Peers Act.”
