NYCLU, ACLU, Lambda Legal Statement on NYU Langone Settlement with DOJ
NEW YORK — In light of the announcement today of a settlement between NYU and the Department of Justice, Lambda Legal, NYCLU, ACLU, counsel for the class in Coe v. Blanche, issued the following statement:
“Because of our lawsuit and the resulting injunction, no patient information of any kind has been disclosed to the Department of Justice as part of NYU’s or Mt. Sinai’s recently-announced settlements—nor could it be, as that order remains in full effect. It’s beyond shameful that the Trump administration has strong-armed NYU and Mt. Sinai into striking a deal that betrays transgender young people in New York. While we don’t know the full terms of the agreement, we do know it is another capitulation that puts political retribution over hospitals’ ethical and legal obligations to, and the well-being of, trans youth. Transgender young people deserve access to gender-affirming care, which helps them live as their authentic selves and can be lifesaving. We will continue fighting side by side with transgender young people and their families to protect their rights.”
