NYCLU Calls on New State Legislature to Pass Civil Rights Reforms

Voting
NEW YORK ‒ The New York Civil Liberties Union issued the following statement from Executive Director Donna Lieberman after the votes were counted on Election Day:

“New York voters braved broken scanners and long lines in the rain yesterday to deliver the message loud and clear: we want a state government that stands up for our rights and does everything it can to strengthen the pillars of our democracy, fight for the dignity of all people, and push back against the regime of hate and greed in Washington.

“The new legislature in Albany has a historic opportunity – indeed a mandate – to make New York a leader by passing legislation that will protect our democracy. Now is the time to update antiquated voting laws, safeguard reproductive health care rights, achieve equal justice under the law, and expand protections against discrimination.

“We look forward to working with the new leadership in Albany to make these urgent reforms a reality.”

As bold as the spirit of New York, we are the NYCLU.
