NYCLU Demands Transparency After Another Death of Incarcerated Person at Central NY Prison Amid Strikes
The prison is near the facility where Robert Brooks was murdered in December.
NEW YORK – On March 1, a 22-year-old incarcerated man at Mid-State Correctional Facility in Marcy was found dead after he was reportedly brutally beaten by correction officers, amid strikes across state prisons. The prison, which has a documented history of abuse, is near the facility where Robert Brooks was murdered in December. In response, the New York Civil Liberties Union released the following statement attributable to Executive Director Donna Lieberman:
“We are extremely disturbed by the reported killing of another incarcerated person in Marcy at the hands of correction officers and call for full transparency and justice.
“This is not an isolated incident. Just months ago, directly across the street from this facility, correction officers murdered Robert Brooks, adding to a long list of incarcerated New Yorkers brutalized by correction staff.
“No one should die in custody at the hands of correction officers, who are charged with the safety and security of individuals in DOCCS’s facilities. As our state prisons are teetering on disaster, DOCCS’s culture of violence, including its abuse of solitary confinement and recent suspension of the HALT Act, has gone unchecked for too long and must end.”
