NYCLU on Governor Hochul Signing Bill Protecting Access to Gender-Affirming Care

ALBANY – Today, Governor Hochul signed S.2475-B (Hoylman-Sigal) / A.6046-B (Bronson), which protects gender-affirming care in New York. This includes preventing New York from cooperating in hostile states’ retaliation against gender-affirming care providers, patients, family members, and those who help people access care.

In response, the New York Civil Liberties Union issued the following statement from Executive Director Donna Lieberman:

“As we mark Pride Month, New York has taken an important step to protect the rights and well-being of the trans community – particularly young people and their families. By signing the Hoylman-Sigal/Bronson bill, the Governor is helping to make our state a beacon for access to gender-affirming care. In the face of nationwide attacks targeting transgender communities – and transgender youth in particular – this legislation ensures that New York will not participate in other states’ attempts to punish people for seeking or helping someone access gender-affirming care.

“Access to gender-affirming care can be lifesaving. We will continue to defend the rights of everyone in New York to live as their authentic selves, free from harm and discrimination.”

As bold as the spirit of New York, we are the NYCLU.
