NYCLU to Court: Mayor Adams’s Refusal to Implement NYC Solitary Ban is Illegal
Civil Liberties Union
The New York Civil Liberties Union supports Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s decision to restore immigrant access to driver’s licenses. Udi Ofer, legislative counsel and field director of the NYCLU, was in Albany today observing a joint Senate committee hearing on the policy. The following statement is attributable to Ofer: “Governor Spitzer’s decision to restore immigrant access to driver’s licenses pulls hundreds of thousands of residents from the shadows, helping them become contributing members of society. The result is safer roads and improved security for all New Yorkers.

Opponents of the measure shamelessly exploit the tragedy of 9/11 for political gain. This common-sense policy strengthens security by providing law enforcement much more information about who is living in New York. The state will have records on hundreds of thousands of residents who before were not in the state’s databases.”
