NYCLU on CCRB Report Finding Alarming Increase in NYPD Misconduct Complaints

NEW YORK CITY – The Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB) issued a new report yesterday finding a rise in misconduct complaints against the NYPD and a lack of accountability for officer abuse. In response, the New York Civil Liberties Union released the following statement attributable to Senior Staff Attorney Lupe Aguirre:

“The alarming rise in police misconduct complaints under Mayor Adams and the impunity many officers enjoy after abusing New Yorkers is a predictable consequence of this administration doubling down on the racist and ineffective broken windows policing.

“What’s worse, as misconduct complaints have reached their highest number since 2012 near the height of the unconstitutional stop-and-frisk era, this administration is more brazen than ever when it comes to undermining its own oversight agency – more evidence that the mayor is not taking police accountability seriously.

“This administration’s unwillingness to think beyond the stop-and-frisk playbook means more police harassment and profiling of poor people, people of color and immigrants – not safer communities. As the Trump administration is pushing to shield police departments from accountability, we must stop wasting resources on ineffective and harmful policing tactics, strengthen police oversight, and invest in the types of services that actually make New Yorkers’ lives better.”
