NYCLU on SCOTUS Allowing Trump to Gut Temporary Protected Status Program

WASHINGTON D.C. – Today the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the President has unrestrained power to end the Temporary Protected Status Program (TPS), which for decades has allowed eligible immigrants to live and work legally in the U.S. if they cannot return safely to their origin countries due to natural disasters, armed conflicts, and other extraordinary conditions. In response, the New York Civil Liberties Union issued the following statement from Executive Director Donna Lieberman:

“Today’s outrageous and cruel decision by the U.S. Supreme Court puts over a million lives in peril and undermines a core promise of this country: to be a refuge for those fleeing natural disasters and wars, and seeking a better life for themselves and their families.

“The Court has looked past or condoned the President’s grotesque and racist rhetoric to allow the administration to do its worst and go after teachers, healthcare workers, business owners, parents, grandparents, siblings, neighbors, and loved ones no matter the future danger they face.

“In the wake of the Court’s decision, New York state and local governments must do all they can to ensure no one faces Trump’s deportation machine without help. That means fully funding immigrant legal services and passing the Access to Representation Act and the Building Up Immigrant Legal Defense Act in Albany.

“New York is great because of immigrants, and the NYCLU will continue to do all we can to protect our communities and fight Trump’s racist, cruel, and chaotic deportation agenda.”
