Columbia University Gives in to Trump Admin Demands, Eroding Academic Freedom and Student Speech

NEW YORK CITY – In response to reporting that the Trump Administration’s Department of Justice ordered the dismissal of charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams, the New York Civil Liberties Union released the following statement:
“The directive to dismiss charges against Mayor Adams is another example of the Trump administration hijacking the Justice Department for its own ends. The memo barely hides its political purpose and runs roughshod over any notion of independent justice and the rule of law.
“There are urgent, unanswered questions about the reported recent courtship between Adams and Trump, and what they may have agreed to ahead of this order to dismiss. The Mayor’s late and surprise embrace of Trump and his push to undermine longstanding city laws protecting immigrants is alarming.
“By dismissing the charges without prejudice, the Trump administration retains the option to refile charges and keeps open a channel to exert political pressure. By giving ground to Trump’s cruel immigration designs, Adams is betraying our communities. New Yorkers must wonder whether the Mayor’s personal interests and the City’s are now in indefinite conflict.”
