The New York Civil Liberties Union has published a new informational handbook to help people understand their constitutional rights and recognize when those rights have been violated.
The 67-page handbook, Understanding Civil Liberties: A Guide for the Perplexed, concisely answers dozens of complex questions often asked about how constitutional rights apply to people’s daily lives. Topics covered include free speech rights, the separation of church and state, reproductive rights, medical privacy, rights in the workplace, students’ rights, LGBT rights and how the war on terrorism has eroded civil liberties.
“Constitutional rights do not enforce themselves. People need to speak up and often fight for their rights,” NYCLU Executive Director Donna Lieberman said. “This new handbook arms New Yorkers with the information needed to do just that.”
The handbook was prepared by the NYCLU’s Nassau County Chapter. It is dedicated to the memory of John Perry, a former member of the chapter’s board of directors who died on 9/11 during rescue operations at the Twin Towers.
