NYCLU Response to Ruling on Non-Profit Disclosure Law

NEW YORK – The Southern District of New York ruled today that a 2016 state law requiring non-profit organizations to publicly disclose certain donors is unconstitutional. The following is a statement from NYCLU executive director Donna Lieberman:

“Today’s decision is an important victory for first amendment rights. Issue advocacy, a core component of many non-profit organizations, inform people of how public policies affect their communities, and donors have the right to privacy when supporting non-profits that engage in this work. The court rightly rejected New York’s law requiring non-profit’s to reveal their donors’ personal information, and we are pleased they found the law unconstitutional.”
