NYCLU Statement on ICE Staying at Nassau County Jail

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – Nassau County Executive Laura Curran announced today that, following backlash to her plan to move ICE from the Nassau County Jail to the Nassau University Medical Center, ICE will stay in their trailer at the jail for now. Community groups and civil liberties advocates expressed concerns that the move to the medical center would inhibit access to healthcare for undocumented community members, and remain concerned by the proposal to maintain ICE’s presence on jail premises. 
 

The following statement is attributable to Susan Gottehrer, director of the Nassau County chapter of the New York Civil Liberties Union:

 

“We look forward to speaking with Executive Curran in the coming days about building trust with the community and ensuring county services are available to all. Just as ICE doesn’t belong at our medical facilities, they don’t belong at the jail. Everyone should be able to turn to law enforcement or medical personnel when they need help, without fearing for themselves or their family. For the sake of the well-being of all our neighbors, county leaders need to draw clear lines between those who protect and serve our community and Washington’s cruel anti-immigrant agenda.”
