NYCLU Statement on Commissioner Tisch Remaining with Mamdani Administration

In response to the announcement that the incoming Mamdani administration will keep NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch in her role, the NYCLU released the following statement attributed to Executive Director Donna Lieberman:

“The NYCLU is a longtime critic of the NYPD and will remain so, but we have appreciated Commissioner Tisch standing up to President Trump and stating loud and clear that there is no basis to send the National Guard to New York City and affirming that New Yorkers have the right to protest.

“In the new administration, the NYCLU hopes that the Commissioner places a renewed emphasis on officer accountability, cooperating with the CCRB, and lowering racial disparities in enforcement. The Commissioner should also join the Mayor-Elect in seeking to reduce the City’s misplaced demands on police to solve entrenched problems, like the city’s lack of housing or mental health care.

“The NYCLU will continue to monitor, challenge, and hold the NYPD and the Commissioner accountable to New Yorkers.”
