The trustees of the State University of New York today unanimously voted to adopt uniform standards for handling and preventing cases of sexual assault, thanks to urging by Governor Cuomo that they respond to what he called an epidemic of sexual violence. The leadership of the New York Civil Liberties Union hailed the governor’s proposal.

“Sexual assault is an assault on individual dignity and autonomy,” said New York Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Donna Lieberman. “Governor Cuomo’s proposal sends a clear message to college and university officials that they must ensure the safety and safeguard the rights of students who suffer sexual assault on campus. This new resolution will give officials the tools they need to help survivors regain control of their lives.”
