Report Finds Unconstitutional levels of Stop-and-Frisk by NYPD’s “Anti-Crime” Units

NEW YORK CITY – The NYPD federal monitor issued its latest report, which shows that the department’s revamped “anti-crime” units continue to illegally stop, frisk and search New Yorkers at unacceptable rates. In response, the New York Civil Liberties Union released the following statement attributable to Executive Director Donna Lieberman:

“The report’s findings are troubling but not surprising. For years, the NYCLU and community members have raised the alarm about the NYPD’s ‘anti-crime’ units and their revamped versions under Mayor Adams – the Neighborhood Safety Teams and the Public Safety Teams. These units may have new names and uniforms, but they continue to engage in a pattern of targeting innocent Black and Brown New Yorkers for unconstitutional and dehumanizing stops and frisks. By doing so, they are perpetuating a harmful legacy of unlawful policing that has cost New Yorkers’ lives.

“Mayor Adams has essentially given these units carte blanche to harass and intimidate New Yorkers. As Trump is pushing to step up stop-and-frisk across the country, it is even more troubling that our city’s leadership is ignoring the hard lessons we should have learned over decades of use and abuse. It’s time to dismantle these units, stop wasting resources on ineffective and harmful policing tactics and instead invest in the types of services that actually make New Yorkers’ lives better.”
