Trump Yanks Millions of NYC School Funds Over Bathroom Policies

NEW YORK, NY – Today, the Trump administration rescinded millions of dollars from New York City Public Schools because the city’s Education Department will not restricted transgender students from using bathrooms that are consistent with their gender identities. In response, the New York Civil Liberties Union issued the following statement, attributable to Johanna Miller, Director of the Education Policy Center:

“Trump’s decision to rip millions of dollars from the nation’s largest public school system and bully New York City’s most vulnerable students is a sick move that will hurt thousands of young people across all five boroughs. The Trump regime’s transphobic agenda has no place in our city’s schools.

“Let’s be clear: New York City’s public schools welcome every student, local law and regulations protect public school students’ right to use restrooms consistent with their gender identity, and the Trump administration cannot rescind these funds to force its ideology on New Yorkers.

“The city must stand up to these attacks, continue to follow the law, support students, and reject this hateful rhetoric. All New Yorkers — transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming students included — deserve dignity and equal access, not discrimination.”
