Feeding one’s newborn is a core aspect of parenthood, a vital source of maternal-infant bonding, and important for maternal and infant health. Whether you choose to breastfeed or feed with formula, the evidence is clear that feeding is a vitally important activity for infant development and wellbeing. Every newborn deserves to experience this deeply intimate connection with their birthing parent, no matter where they begin their life. Denying someone the opportunity to nourish their child because they are incarcerated is harmful to maternal and infant health and antithetical to reproductive justice.
The NYCLU strongly supports A.1607-A/S.2666-A to help ensure that all birthing parents in New York prisons and jails can access the supplies and resources they need to facilitate safe and dignified breastfeeding and lactation, as well as formula feeding, for their children.
