Correctional Body Scanner Standards Act

Since March 2025, in response to the demands of correctional officers who participated in an unauthorized work stoppage, visitors to New York prisons have been required to pass through ionizing body scanners to visit with their incarcerated loved ones. Meanwhile, passing through the scanners is optional for those who work inside the prisons, resulting in approximately 90% of staff opting out of body scanner screenings.

The Correctional Body Scanner Standards Act would impose requirements for how state and local corrections officers handle body scan anomalies, thereby improving the way that officers treat visitors and supporting critical visits. The legislation would also improve efforts to stymie contraband by requiring that all people who enter state and local correctional facilities go through a screening process.
