Testimony before the NYC Council Education Committee on Surveillance and Education Technology in Schools

The NYCLU submitted comments to urge greater Council oversight of education technology (“EdTech”) deployed in New York City Public Schools (“DOE/NYCPS”), particularly technology with surveillance capacity, given the snowballing scope, harms, fiscal impact and potential for waste in this sector. Schools are increasingly turning to surveillance EdTech as a false solution, often with little evidence, oversight, or efficacy. We urge the Council to use its influence this budget cycle to bring harmful and misguided city spending to light and support students, families, and educators looking for real answers from decision makers.
