WHO'S UNDER THREAT
The NYCLU has long been a strong defender of the rights of immigrants in New York. The state has one of the largest and most diverse immigrant populations in the United States. Immigrants have endured increased attacks on their civil rights and liberties in recent years, particularly under the Trump administration’s draconian detention and deportation machine. Many immigrant communities have little access to resources and are frequently marginalized by policymakers and law enforcement.
WHAT WE'RE DOING
The NYCLU is working aggressively to defend immigrants in New York against threatening government policies and to promote awareness of and advocate for legislation and policies that expand and protect the rights of immigrant communities. Whether it is challenging unlawful immigration detention, securing the rights of immigrant children to be reunited with their families, speaking out against xenophobic hate, championing local and state policies that protect immigrants, defeating local anti-immigrant ordinances, or informing immigrant communities of their rights through trainings and presentations, the NYCLU works together in coalition with immigrants’ rights groups across the state to advocate on behalf of immigrants.
