NYC Council Honors NYC Bill Of Rights Defense Campaign

On April 1, the New York City Council honored the New York City Bill of Rights Defense Campaign with a proclamation for its “outstanding service to the city, state and nation.”

Deputy Majority Leader Bill Perkins signed the proclamation on behalf of the City Council, and presented it along with Speaker Gifford Miller at a ceremony in City Hall. Udi Ofer, NYCLU project director, and Terry Hasan, legislative committee co-facilitator, accepted the proclamation on behalf of the New York City Bill of Rights Defense Campaign.

The New York City Bill of Rights Defense Campaign is a nonpartisan grassroots project of the NYCLU.

PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS: The Council of the City of New York is pleased and proud to honor the exceptional work of the New York City Bill of Rights Defense Campaign; and

WHEREAS: It is the tradition and custom of the New York City Council to honor the accomplishments of its finest organizations, and today we are immensely proud to recognize the dedicated efforts of all the men and women working with the NYC Bill of Rights Defense Campaign (NYCBORDC); and

WHEREAS: The New York City Bill of Rights Defense Campaign is committed to restoring and protecting the fundamental rights and liberties of all citizens that have been curtailed by the United States government since the tragic events of September 11, 2001; and

WHEREAS: NYCBORDC is a non-partisan, grassroots project of the New York Civil Liberties Union that works with a broad spectrum of coalition organizations and is dedicated to educating the public, the legal community, the media and government officials on post-9-11 civil liberties issues; and

WHEREAS: Among its goals are lobbying and passing legislation that will counter the curtailment of civil liberties and create mechanisms for government oversight; and

WHEREAS: NYCBORDC also challenges the discriminatory policies of the war on terrorism and its effect on every United States resident, particularly members of the Arab, Muslim and South Asian communities; and

WHEREAS: Today, we honor the New York City Bill of Rights Defense Campaign, an organization whose contributions have been truly distinguished and have enriched our City immeasurably. NYCBORDC exemplifies the very best in civic virtue and is worthy of the esteem of all New Yorkers; now, therefore

BE IT KNOWN: That the Council of the City of New York most gratefully honors the

NEW YORK BILL OF RIGHTS DEFENSE CAMPAIGN

For its outstanding service to the City, state and nation.
