Mayor de Blasio signed an Executive Order today providing fully paid parental leave to 20,000 public employees, placing New York City among the most generous municipal paid family leave providers in the nation.

The following statement is attributable to New York Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Donna Lieberman:

“Paid family leave is essential to the health and well-being of New York City’s workforce — especially those who live paycheck to paycheck and lack job security. Today there are more women in the paid workforce than ever before, many households are headed by single parents, and elder care as well as child care continues to rest on the shoulders of women.

We applaud the Mayor’s leadership on this critical issue and call on the state to pass the Paid Family Leave Insurance Act so that New Yorkers are not forced to choose between paying the bills and taking care of their family.”

As bold as the spirit of New York, we are the NYCLU.
