NYCLU Calls City Council Racial Profiling Bill “Unenforceable”

The New York Civil Liberties Union today announced its opposition to the new racial profiling bill (Int. 142-B) passed by New York’s City Council.

The NYCLU supported the bill, with some qualifications, as originally introduced (Int. 142). In testimony before the Public Safety Committee, the NYCLU urged the City Council to pass legislation that adopted the basic framework of that bill.

However, the NYCLU withdrew its support after the bill was stripped of numerous key provisions and the definition of “racial or ethnic profiling” was amended in response to objections by the NYPD.

As bold as the spirit of New York, we are the NYCLU.
