NYCLU on Reporting of Leaked SCOTUS Opinion Overturning Roe

NEW YORK – In response to reporting of a leaked draft opinion from the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, New York Civil Liberties Union executive director Donna Lieberman issued the following statement:

“If, as reported, the Supreme Court stands poised to overturn Roe v. Wade and half the states lie in wait to ban abortion, New York will once again be called on to lead, opening our doors to people from across the country who need abortion care. We are ready.

“As federal reproductive rights vanish, New York will again be a beacon for people who need abortion care, including women, girls, and transgender and gender non-conforming people. In New York today the Reproductive Health Act codifies Roe v. Wade in state law, recognizing abortion – and the whole range of reproductive care — as a fundamental right. People from Mississippi to Texas are welcome here and have the right to get the vital care they need.

“Our state first opened its doors to abortion care five decades ago, and three years before the Court decided Roe. To truly lead the way today, there is even more New York must do. The NYCLU will work to ensure New York enshrines new protections in our constitution, protects our providers, and delivers funding needed to access care.

“In the coming weeks and months the NYCLU will work tirelessly to ensure that New Yorkers and anyone across the country needing care knows that in New York abortion is your right.”

As bold as the spirit of New York, we are the NYCLU.
