NYCLU Statement on New York City Desegregation Plan from School Diversity Advisory Group

The School Diversity Advisory Group, an appointed committee tasked to desegregate city public schools, released a host of recommendations the city can take to finally integrate schools and create a more diverse public school experience for all New York City Children.

The following statement is attributable to NYCLU Executive Director Donna Lieberman:

For too long, the legacy of racial and socioeconomic segregation has perpetuated vast inequalities in resources, experiences, and opportunities for public schools, students, and families. The first thing Mayor de Blasio must do to keep his promise to undo the purposeful racial segregation that still plagues our city’s schools is to eliminate district lines that were drawn with the explicit intent to exclude communities of color and create a truly integrated school system. We are glad the SDAG is acknowledging the harms of the past in its recommendations for creating equity in the present.”

As bold as the spirit of New York, we are the NYCLU.
