NYCLU Statement in Response to Hochul & Adams’ Calls for ICE and Law Enforcement Collusion

NEW YORK CITY – Following Governor Hochul and Mayor Adams’ recent comments calling for increased collusion between local law enforcement and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the New York Civil Liberties Union issued the following statement, attributable to Executive Director Donna Lieberman:

“Governor Hochul and Mayor Adams’ calls for law enforcement to conspire with ICE would undermine public safety and push more of our new neighbors into the shadows and away from the basic support services that are essential to help them get settled, get jobs, and contribute to the community. With city and state data showing that amidst the increase in new migrant arrivals, public safety is actually improving, it’s clear that Adams and Hochul are playing politics.

“Migrants have come to this country seeking safety and to provide for their families. Their success and their contributions are crucial to the future of New York. Instead of stoking anti-immigrant rhetoric and enabling ICE’s cruel agenda, Adams and Hochul should be implementing real solutions like pressing hard for the work authorization that every immigrant desires, and for safe, affordable housing and supportive services.”

As bold as the spirit of New York, we are the NYCLU.
