NYCLU Statement on Trump Rolling Back ACA Contraceptive Coverage Mandate

Women's Equality
The US Department of Health and Human Services today announced new rules rolling back the employer birth control coverage mandate included in the Affordable Care Act. The rules would permit a broad range of employers to stop offering free birth control through their health insurance plans if they have a “sincerely held religious or moral objection.” The ACLU is suing over the new rules.

The following statement is attributable to New York Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Donna Lieberman:

“The Trump administration has once again shown that it cannot be trusted to protect a woman’s ability to make fundamental decisions about her life and to participate equally in society. New Yorkers should understand that the Trump administration’s new rules do not change things for New York insurers, who must still offer free birth control coverage. But the need to further strengthen state regulations around birth control access is more urgent than ever.

“State lawmakers must pass the Comprehensive Contraceptive Coverage Act to help safeguard women’s health, dignity and rights in New York.”
