Joint Letter to Governors: Protect the Health and Safety of People Detained by ICE

The New York Civil Liberties Union, ACLU of New Jersey, and ACLU of Connecticut wrote a joint letter to Governors Cuomo, Lamont, and Murphy to demand urgent action to protect the large numbers of people detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and currently held in local jails and private detention in the midst of the coronavirus crisis.

The letter urges action to release as many people as possible from ICE’s custody, increase testing and enhance public health conditions in ICE facilities, ensure that there are no new admissions of people during the pandemic, and provide reentry services for people released from facilities.
