NEW YORK − The New York Civil Liberties Union offers the following comment from executive director Donna Lieberman in response to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s announcement that he would sign an executive order granting people on parole the right to vote:
“Restoring voting rights of people on parole is crucial to encouraging civic participation, making our political process more inclusive, and ensuring that formerly incarcerated people return to their communities successfully. This is an important step to strengthen our democracy. The New York state legislature has more work to do, including establishing early voting and same-day voter registration, to ensure all eligible voters can have a say in our government.”
