After ICE Admitted Having No Justification for Arrests at Immigration Courthouses, District Court Grants Stay Prohibiting ICE From Conducting Courthouse Arrests

Governor Andrew Cuomo issued an executive order today that prohibits state agencies from inquiring about a person’s immigration status, with few exceptions. Importantly, it would protect immigrants who seek law enforcement assistance.
The following statement can be attributed to NYCLU Executive Director Donna Lieberman:
“With the Governor’s order, New York takes an enormous step to resist the cruel, unjust and anti-immigrant Trump Agenda. No one should have to worry that a call to the police for help or an interaction with a state agency could land them in the clutches of immigration agents. With detentions and deportations ballooning, and just days after the President announced an end to DACA, this order offers a significant measure of relief to the immigrant community. We hope today’s action inspires further sanctuary measures across the state as well as a reexamination of law enforcement practices that place immigrant New Yorkers in jeopardy.”
