NYCLU Celebrates 60th Anniversary in Style at Gala and Awards Dinner
The New York Civil Liberties Union celebrated its 60th anniversary with more than 300 friends and supporters at a March 15 gala and awards dinner at the Tribeca Rooftop in Manhattan. "Sixty years of fighting for New Yorkers’ rights and civil liberties is cause for real celebration," said NYCLU Executive Director Donna Lieberman. "The gala was more than a celebration – it was an opportunity to reflect on our accomplishments over the past six decades and an occasion to consider the challenges that lay ahead."
The New York Civil Liberties Union celebrated its 60th anniversary with more than 300 friends and supporters at a March 15 gala and awards dinner at the Tribeca Rooftop in Manhattan.
“Sixty years of fighting for New Yorkers’ rights and civil liberties is cause for real celebration,” said NYCLU Executive Director Donna Lieberman. “The gala was more than a celebration – it was an opportunity to reflect on our accomplishments over the past six decades and an occasion to consider the challenges that lay ahead.”
Host Aasif Mandvi of The Daily Show set an irreverent, smart and topical tone for the event, which was attended by more 300 people.
The NYCLU honored Ana Oliveira, executive director of the New York Women’s Foundation, which supports human rights work on behalf of women worldwide. NYCLU Legal Director Arthur Eisenberg and Associate Legal Director Christopher Dunn were honored for their visionary leadership of the organization’s legal program. The law firm of Dorsey & Whitney, co-counsel in the NYCLU’s landmark lawsuit challenging heavy-handed policing in New York City schools, was also honored.
Grammy-winning band The Roots closed out the evening with a raucous and energetic set that had the whole room dancing.
