NYCLU on Response to Cooper Union Protests

NEW YORK – In response to the reactions of New York state and local leaders to yesterday’s protest and counter protest at Cooper Union, the New York Civil Liberties Union issued the following statement attributable to Executive Director Donna Lieberman:

“According to reports, Wednesday’s protests at Cooper Union were peaceful. Protestors and counter protestors were not violent and made no direct threats. That did not stop New York’s leaders from invoking hate, intimidation, and the police. During such a critical moment, our state and local officials have a responsibility to ensure space for differing voices, not to engage in fear-mongering that risks chilling protected speech. The clash of views and exchange of ideas is essential to our democracy.”

As bold as the spirit of New York, we are the NYCLU.
