The Youth Interrogation Bill will provide critical protections for children under the age of 18 during police interrogations. Chiefly, the bill will require that all children subject to police interrogation speak with an attorney before any police questioning can begin. Unlike the Miranda Rights themselves, which children frequently unknowingly waive, this right to speak with an attorney would be unwaivable under the bill.
Along with a broad and growing group of supporters, including numerous child developmental specialists, the NYCLU urges lawmakers to pass the Youth Interrogation Bill this session.
