Who Can Consent to Health Care On Your Behalf?

Legally, people under 18 seeking health care still need consent from parents or guardians. The following adults may consent to your health care:
  • Parents: Generally, parents have the right to make medical decisions for you.
  • Guardians and Parental Designees: If you have a legal guardian, they can consent to your health care.
  • The Commissioners of Health or Social Services: If you have been taken into the court’s custody, or if you are in foster care, the commissioner of social services or the local health commissioner may consent to your healthcare.
